Buried A Man I Hated There eBook Adam Pepper Reviews

Fans who have read and enjoyed Pepper's previous books, including "Symphony of Blood" and "Skin Games" will enjoy his latest work, "Buried a Man I Hated There", which focuses on a guy named Jack Maddox, who tragically lost his wife and daughter many years ago. However, his wife had a twin, Heidi, who Jack meets up with every Valentine's Day as a ritualistic homage to his departed wife. He starts to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Hawthorne, who is most definitely not someone who should be in any kind of a position in the mental health field and frankly, needs his own head checked out. There are blurred lines as to who Jack has become now versus who he was when his wife and daughter were still alive, which we get glimpses of, and they paint a very different picture than one may assume.

"Buried a Man I Hated There" is definitely more in the vein of "quiet" horror in that there aren't big thrills and chills, or axe-wielding murderers chasing after people, and there aren't any supernatural threats--it's not that kind of book, and is much more grounded in reality and what happens when a man's mind, for all intents and purposes, breaks, and how he can put it back together. It'll definitely keep you guessing as you turn the pages, and presents an interesting story with even more interesting characters.
Since losing his wife and daughter 10 years ago, Jack Maddox suffers from memory loss. His wife's twin sister, Heidi, meets with him once a year every Valentine's Day in an isolated field in Vermont. She tries to get him to move on with his life, but he refuses.

Back in Manhattan, Jack is a window washer, working at great heights with no fear. His favorite building is where Heidi works, and he spends much time cleaning her office window. He likes to work alone, but on occassion has to share his platform with a co-worker.

Heidi begins to date the head of a huge corporation, but she can't seem to give herself over to him. She becomes increasingly concerned with Jack and starts to display behavior as strange as his.

Then there's Jack's psychiatrist, Dr. Hawthorne, a real sleazeball who seems to be in the business just for the money. We learn he has also lost a young daughter, and seems to take things out on Jack (mentally, at least) during their sessions. But his way of coping with things leads to the abuse of another patient and his eventual ruin.

BURIED A MAN I HATED THERE, while a thriller, is also a truly odd mystery. When I passed the 100th page I still had no idea where the author was going, and I didn't until the final few chapters. Pepper keeps you guessing from early on, and most of the time you'll be on the edge of your seat . If you're afraid of heights (like I am) you're in for a real freak-out, and the conclusion, while wrapped up nicely, still leaves room for contemplation.

Although a bit different from his previous offerings, BURIED should satisfy anyone looking for a tight, solid read.
Jack is delusional, occasionally suicidal and he's loosing his memories, including one he wouldn't mind loosing. His sister-in-law, Heidi, tries to encourage him back to reality while battling with her own secret. The only thing that seems to connect them is a snowy field on Valentine's Day. But that's about to change.

This was a really different kind of story with a unique pace that was quite hypnotic. The book takes the reader through the lives and experiences of three characters, each grappling with a tragic loss, and the impact this has on them. With the building tension, I kept expecting someone to snap and go crazy, but no one did and the mystery kept up until the end.

Now, I have to warn all Adam Pepper fans (of which I am one) this is a big departure from his usual style. He even warned me, before I reviewed it, that this was a different kind of story for him. But it still threw me, as I had "Skin Games" and "Symphony of Blood" in mind (other Pepper titles that I love). And this newest book of his is nothing like his previous ones! I had to almost forget who the writer was while reading. Still good, mind you, but totally different from anything I would expect from him.

The other thing that threw me is the title, `Buried a Man I Hated There'. By the end, I could understand why that title can work with the story, but it made me think this was a murder-mystery of some kind. And while there is a mystery and a murder, it's not in the police detective sort of a way.

I'd still recommend it though, despite my issue with the title. Just be prepared to discover another side to Adam Pepper's writing. Fortunately, it's a pleasant discovery!

I received a copy of this book from the author, in exchange for an honest review.
I got this book on recommendation from a friend and I'm glad I got it. It was a great read for the train!
